Review: The Boltek LD-350 Lightning Detector Part 2 Of 2
I've always been fascinated by lightning detectors. Building lightning detectors from circuit boards, and from kits has been a perennial hobby of mine for many years.
The process of set-up and use is very easy to begin with. Eventually, the end user can become more familiar with the myriad of functions and features, via the User Manual, as time allows.
I found the unit to be very accurate. Especially when used at higher elevations. The main unit itself, is very light and compact. It has 4 rubber feet attached, to protect the surface it's placed on.
Pros:
- Provides Professional (weather-channel-level) performance, at very affordable (hobbyist-level) price.
- Super-easy to set-up and use (easy start-up / operation).
- Level of features (complexity) which may be enabled limited only by the user's desire to become familiar with the system.
- Possesses a great level of expandability.
- Accuracy and performance increases with how high your location is above sea level.

Review: The Boltek LD-350 Lightning Detector Part 1 Of 2
The stormy/thunderstorm season is here - It's here now!
It didn't arrive in April...or May...But at the tail end of June; and there's no better time to test lightning detectors!
...Back in 2017 I contacted Boltek in regards to getting a loaner LD-350, to review. I missed that opportunity. The rainy/stormy season came and went...And in the years which followed, my Bat Detector Review blog really took off.
Then I missed a few more rainy seasons...Well, I'll spare you all the boring details, the important thing is: here we are!
This is Part 1, of a detailed, 2-part review. This part will focus on results obtained here at home - Dutchess County New York, at an elevation of only 211 feet above sea level - In a valley!*
*When you see the various screen captures, it will make sense as to why the lightning strikes detected are generally only North & South.
Part 2 will focus on results, and screen captures obtained at a cabin we go to on vacation. The cabin is located near Lake Luzerne New York, and is at an elevation of 1,191 feet above sea level!
Another point to note, is that here at home: The unit (specifically, the antenna) picks up disturbances, which it registers as strikes, directly above the antenna.
I will confess it was originally driving me crazy — I couldn't understand why it was happening (I currently still don't know why). For the time being, I'm going to just presume the system's antenna is being triggered by Muon particles from space. The antenna/system is registering it as a lightning strike.
It's a mystery I'm trying to figure out; and it will be a relief if these strikes from above disappear, when we increase altitude by ~ 1000 feet. Stay tuned for Part 2...
Let's have a look at what you can expect when you order one.
- On a patio or deck.
- At ground level, outdoors.
- Even indoors!
- One to indicate noise reception.
- One to indicate lightning strike.
- One to indicate a storm is in close proximity.
- One to indicate severe storm conditions.
It goes without saying, but I've always been fascinated by lightning detectors. I have *woah* the house lights just flickered* I may lose power - LoL

HEROS Technology Ltd. in The UK
This UK-based company's website is looking so good these days, it warrants having It's own blog post written: The company is HEROS Technology Ltd. in The UK.
I've always admired the products this company offers. Especially what might be called their flagship product: Their VLF-LF-MW Bands Upconverter Back when I was very actively trying to DX NDB's (and NAVTEX), I longed to own one of these units!
Another interesting factor, is that for what you get, which is arguably the best LF Converter available, their price is pretty reasonable.
Having just visited their site again, after a long hiatus, I was happy to see all of the new stuff they've added:
- Many new products, with detailed descriptions and information.
- An expanded downloads section, which includes useful advice.
- Antenna matching devices and isolators.
- A Multimedia tab with interesting YouTube videos.

Also Have A Peek At Boltek's Incredible LRX-1!
For now, I would just like to direct your attention to The LRX-1 Lightning Network Detector from Boltek. Basically, this is the system which allows the real magic to happen: Sending out critical, up-to-date, bursts of life saving data - to those who need it most! Accurate information about lightning, sent to network accounts in milliseconds!
I urge you to check out the link above, to find out more. It's an impressive professional system.
And, who knows? There may even be a lot of practical, real-world experiences with the system, written about here on this very blog in the not-too-distant future...
Stay tuned!
Just sharing some stock photos now:

Along With The Upcoming Review of The LD—350 ~ You Can Expect More Posts About Muon Detectors
Ok, this isn't a lightning detector...And it basically has nothing to do with lightning.
I apologize; but it's just too cool not to share.
I've been researching muon detectors left, right, and center - even delving into Particle Physics along the way! The most complex math equations I've ever seen in my life!
As for lightning detectors, The LD-350 from Boltek is currently under test...
I am slowly but surely getting closer to ordering (and building) 2 muon detector kits from UKRAA...
Best wishes!

The Boltek LD-350 is here!
Just a short update post for now:
I'm very happy to announce that the Boltek LD—350 lightning detector is here!
I currently have it set up in it's second location. The 1st installation was not ideal, and was really just for some initial testing. It was very exciting to be setting up a professional lighting detection system for the 1st time!
A sincere thank you to Boltek Corporation, for the loan of the system. I'd originally requested the LD—250, but they did not have any refurbished/loaner units available to send me. In my upcoming review, I will also cover the LD—250, because I believe that many hobbyists will find it to be an affordable, plug-and-play solution.
Along with my excitement, were great expectations for this unit. I acquainted myself with this system, by reading the user manual days before it's arrival. It was a quick and easy installation, as expected. After it was up and running, I also envisioned very accurate results; as in very accurate plotting of lightning strikes, etc.
Here is a quick pic of the antenna, installed in a good location, facing North:
